Jinja: Hernia continues to be a common condition in Busoga.

When an internal bodily component pulls through a tissue wall, a hernia results. Typically, a hernia forms between the hips and chest. You might detect a bulge or enlargement in your groin or stomach. Inguinal and umbilical hernias are the two most typical forms.

According to springer Link, the overall hernia prevalence rate in Uganda is 9 percent with or without recurrence, 3 percent with scars and a yearly rate of 5 percent for persons with inguinal hernias. Although hernias can afflict both adults and children, it is believed that 20 percent of children under the age of 5 have hernias and require surgery.

“I have had this disease for more than ten years. It used to pain me so much and bother me to an extent that I thought I was going to run out of blood, it had developed into a genuine issue and we low-income people cannot afford such surgical procedures. I had to go in for treatment when I learned that the Global surgical institute in Kyabirwa was offering free hernia surgery,” said Waira Farouk

As I recover, I want to express my gratitude to the medical staff and this organization for their excellent care. I urge additional hernia sufferers to visit and take advantage of this opportunity, said Waira Farouk, a local of Eyinuula in Gumpi subcounty, Buyende district.

Inguinal hernia indications and symptoms include a burning or aching where the bulge is, pain or discomfort in the groin, particularly when bending over or lifting, and weakness or pressure in the abdomen in adults, according to Mayo Clinic.org. children who cough, strain during bowel movements, or stand for a long period of time can get it.

According to Dr. Angelica Giibwa of the Global surgical institute, hernias are fairly widespread in Busoga region and are thought to be mostly brought on by a genetic weakness. A hernia camp is now taking place from June 12th through June 30th. She continues by saying that free operations are being provided to assist communities that cannot afford surgical treatment for hernia problems.

Carrying heavy objects that put strain on the abdomen, having a chronic cough brought on especially by smoking, and not treating it well enough can all be risk factors for hernias. Defective hernias can also be caused by genetics or family history. In addition to being male since men are more likely to develop inguinal hernia than women, pregnancy weakens the abdominal muscles and increases pressure inside the belly, according to doctor Angelica Giibwa.

No matter where a hernia is located, she continues, it must be addressed surgically since it is a hole that needs to be closed. Even if someone utilizes a variety of medications, the hernia will eventually return, according to her. Therefore, surgery is the best course of action since it closes the hole and targets whatever was coming through.

However, she notes that treatment is still the same for people who continue to experience recurrence even after the procedure but this can be avoided by inserting a surgical mesh that provides additional support and is safe for the body.
