In a concerted effort to uplift communities and alleviate poverty in Luuka district, the Ministry of Water and Environment embarked on a transformative mission, on Wednesda,  April 17th, 2024, by inspecting irrigation projects aimed at revolutionizing agriculture and fostering economic prosperity among the people of Luuka.

These pivotal initiatives encompass two distinct projects strategically located to maximize agricultural potential and spur socio-economic growth. The first project, situated in Buwambuzi zone, Lwanda ward, Luuka town council, entails an investment of 960 million Ugandan shillings. Meanwhile, another project, situated in Mawumo village, Namadhope parish, Waibuga Sub County, boasts an investment totaling 1 billion Ugandan shillings.

During the site visits, Luuka’s Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Ronald Katende, seized the opportunity to encourage local farmers to diversify their crops, emphasizing the cultivation of high-yielding produce such as cabbage, greens, onions, pineapples, and watermelon. Expressing gratitude to the government for its significant investment in Luuka district, RDC Katende assured residents of imminent infrastructural developments, including the tarmacking of the road from Walugogo to Kamuli, slated to commence in July of the current year.

Kisadha Alex, the district engineer from Luuka, underscored the purpose of the visit, which aimed to assess the progress of the projects undertaken by Nexus Green contractors and ascertain their completion timelines. He urged farmers to prepare their lands in anticipation of the projects’ imminent launch.

Ronald Bikumbi, the speaker of Luuka district, echoed the sentiment of industriousness, urging residents to embrace a proactive mindset and strive for economic empowerment. He emphasized the pivotal role of irrigation in augmenting agricultural output and urged farmers to leverage these resources to cultivate crops that yield quick returns.

The palpable sense of appreciation from the local community, represented by Waibuga Sub County chairman Kayongo Salimu and Luuka town council’s town clerk Siragi Magada, resonated with heartfelt gratitude towards the government for its unwavering commitment to community development.

Engineer Masaba Rogers from the Ministry of Water and Environment provided assurance regarding the longevity of the projects, affirming their sustainability for up to 25 years with proper maintenance. He assured the community of the timely completion of the projects, with contractors slated to finalize their work within the next three weeks.
