In a concerted effort to tackle the prevalent issue of child labour in Luuka district, the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has taken decisive action, marking a significant step towards safeguarding the rights and well-being of children in the region.
Child labour remains a pressing concern across various districts in the Busoga sub-region, posing formidable barriers to the educational advancement and overall development of children. In Luuka district particularly, the problem has been identified in three sub-counties: Nawampiti, Bukanga, and Irongo, necessitating urgent intervention to address this critical issue.
Supported by the European Union, the LWF has spearheaded a comprehensive program aimed at eradicating child labour practices in Luuka district. Recently, the organization launched a pioneering project dedicated to this cause, signaling a commitment to championing the rights of children and fostering a conducive environment for their growth and development.
To equip stakeholders with the necessary tools and knowledge to combat child labour effectively, the LWF organized a week-long workshop from February 19th to February 23rd, 2024. The training focused on community policing strategies, empowering participants to collaborate with law enforcement agencies and community leaders in raising awareness about the detrimental impacts of child labour.
The workshop, held at the Bulongo Sub-county headquarters, saw active participation from various sectors within the district, including law enforcement, healthcare, local governance, religious and cultural leaders, as well as representatives from media and civil society organizations. This diverse gathering underscored the collective resolve to address the multifaceted challenges posed by child labour.
Participants deliberated on the underlying factors contributing to the prevalence of child labour, citing issues such as poverty, family breakdown, gender-based violence, and lack of access to basic necessities. Moreover, they highlighted the adverse consequences of child labour, including disrupted education, early marriages, health risks, and vulnerability to exploitation.
Amidst these discussions, participants reaffirmed their commitment to working collaboratively to combat child labour in Luuka district. Recognizing the urgency of the issue, stakeholders pledged to implement proactive measures aimed at safeguarding children’s rights and ensuring their holistic development.
In closing remarks, district officials and community leaders emphasized the importance of collective action in addressing the root causes of child labour. Urging stakeholders to translate knowledge into action, they underscored the vital role of community-driven initiatives and enforcement of local by-laws to deter exploitative practices and promote children’s access to education and a safe environment.
