The quest for quick wealth through counterfeit practices is posing a significant threat to the rich heritage of traditional medicine in our society. Luuka District Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Ronald Katende has strongly criticized individuals masquerading as traditional healers, exploiting unsuspecting individuals for financial gain without possessing the requisite knowledge of traditional medicine.
Addressing attendees at the inauguration of the Luuka District Culture Traditional Healers and Herbalist Association (LUDITHA) at the district headquarters council hall, RDC Ronald Katende condemned fraudulent activities perpetrated by certain individuals posing as traditional healers. He highlighted instances where such individuals have been implicated in grave desecration, sexual assault, and the destruction of sacred sites, emphasizing the detrimental impact on the region’s cultural integrity.
The surge in such illicit practices prompted Luuka security officials, in collaboration with the Regional Police Commander (RPC) of Busoga North, to convene a meeting involving pastors and practitioners of traditional medicine. The meeting aimed to foster collaboration and address the escalating challenges posed by fraudulent practices within the traditional healing community.
As a result of these deliberations, Luuka witchdoctors resolved to establish a formal association, LUDITHA, aimed at promoting ethical standards and eradicating conflicts among traditional healers. During the association’s launch, RDC Katende Ronald urged practitioners to unite and align their efforts towards collective development goals, cautioning against unnecessary competition with religious institutions.
Simon Wakaze, the Luuka LC V chairman, commended the efforts of LUDITHA’s executive committee in spearheading the establishment of the association, acknowledging the pivotal role it will play in fostering harmony and curbing unethical practices among traditional healers. He pledged continued support from the district government to facilitate the achievement of the association’s objectives.
Tamwizanga Betty, representing the Luuka district community officer, urged all traditional healers to register with LUDITHA to facilitate effective coordination with district authorities. This sentiment was echoed by District Liaison Officer Alineitwe Joseph, who emphasized the importance of formalizing relationships between law enforcement agencies and traditional healers to address pertinent challenges.
Alex Mulwanyi, Secretary of Social Services in Luuka district, expressed gratitude towards the initiative taken by Luuka witches in establishing LUDITHA, underscoring the anticipated positive impact on alleviating societal concerns associated with traditional healing practices.
