Luuka district, under the leadership of Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Waiswa Paul Bwenibwamwiko, has initiated a significant borehole drilling project worth 234 million Uganda Shillings. The project, funded by the NRM-led Ugandan government through Luuka district Local government, aims to provide clean and accessible water to communities in eight Sub Counties within Luuka district.
The launch marked the beginning of drilling activities for nine boreholes, strategically located in the villages of Budhuba A, Inuula, Wandago, Bulike Buyima, Kamwirungu B, Iganga A, Nakyeere, Nawantale, and Nanvunano. Each borehole is estimated to cost 26 million Uganda Shillings.
Deputy RDC Waiswa Paul Bwenibwamwiko, serving as the chief guest at the launch, emphasized the importance of preserving and maintaining these boreholes. He urged the local communities to collaborate in safeguarding the infrastructure while expressing support for the NRM government’s commitment to improving the lives of Ugandans.
To ensure transparency and quality work, Luuka district Deputy Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Richard Promoi directed civil servants in the Sub Counties, including Ikumbya, Bukanga, Waibuga, Bukooma, Bukoova Bulongo, Nawampiti, and Irongo, to monitor the contractors closely. Promoi highlighted the need for cooperation with Sub County chiefs to prevent any irregularities in the implementation of the borehole project.
Simon Wakaze, Chairman of Luuka district, extended gratitude to the government of Uganda, led by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for prioritizing local development initiatives and providing funding.
During the launch, Assistant Health Officer Hidaya Nangobi and Luuka district Water Officer Hasifu Kigenyi emphasized the importance of proper sanitation practices. They encouraged residents to build modern latrines, plate stands, and bathrooms to ensure a healthier living environment, now that clean water is more readily available.
Local residents expressed joy and relief at the borehole project, citing previous challenges in accessing clean water and the associated health risks. The initiative promises to enhance the well-being of communities and contribute to improved hygiene practices in Luuka district.
