Over 3.5billion years of life on earth, everything has followed a natural course of
evolution. As we continue to grow, we impact on the earths systems and this rapid
success of species has affected the natural order.
At first, humans were incredibly in tune with their environment (nomadic hunter-
gatherers following the ebb and flow of the seasons) with measurable and
relatively manageable impacts due to their population size. Nearly every step in
human history has unfortunately been accompanied by a leap in environmental
degradation. With advancement in technology and other human activities, we have
found efficient ways to sustain ourselves which has led to rapid population growth
and distancing/creating a gap with nature.
Evolutionally, populations are growing more and more thereby requiring more
resources to fuel expansion of agriculture, settlement, industrialization,
transportation and urbanization causing a gap between man and nature.
Technological advancements have caused dominance over landscapes and
disruption of natural ecosystems that existed billions of years ago. Economic
development has moved from subsistence, sustainable economy into greedy
exploitation, thus causing ultra-maginified impacts on our environment.
Despite the unique roles played by each species in the biosphere and their inherent
impacts, not every species has the ability to measure their influence and capacity to
impact. However, humans are unique and we are the root of all problems. We are
capable of understanding our influence over nature though we tend to ignore the
earths reaction to our actions.
With societal evolution, we are at the peak of techonological advancements and
pollution which is already affecting our natural systems rippling us consequences
of species extinction, melting of glacier, water scarcity, sea level changes, low
yields, soil infertility, floods , destruction of landscapes.
There is no doubt we purposefully degrade nature. Environmental degradation is
an inherent character/trait of our revolutional growth. We have crippled our
environment yet we have the ability to do something about it.
It is, therefore, our obligation to do whatever we can to protect our planet and this
starts with you. It is our obligation to maintain our environment since we are
dependant on resources and services that it provides to achieve our stability as well
as enable future generations to fulfill their goals.
All creatures are interdependent, right from the smallest micro-organism to the
largest mammal on earth and non has a right to infringe on the livelihood of the
other. We need to know as humans that our role in nature conservation is
paramount and needs to be handled with care and enthusiasm.
Our role should be subsistence rather than commercialization due to our ability and
understanding of nature that obliges us to maintain integrity of our environment.
We also ought to change our life styles and how it affects the environment by
making our homes, schools and organization more environmentally friendly
through adoption of environmentally friendly practices like 3Rs, composting,
better choices of transportation, avoiding toxic chemicals and waste minimization
by paying attention to minor details in our lives. So let us do something to save
nature.
