Jinja: The vibrant Nyege Nyege Festival is set to return to Jinja in November 2023, and this time, it comes with the full endorsement of Busoga Kingdom’s Tourism and Heritage Ministry. The annual event, known for its celebration of music, dance, and culture, has become a significant highlight for both local and international revelers.
The preparations for the upcoming festival were officially launched at the Source of the Nile Gardens in Jinja city. Under the theme “Back to the Source,” Nyege Nyege is scheduled to take place from November 9th to 12th at various locations, including the Source of the Nile Show Ground, Golf Course, and Jinja’s Nile Park.
Hellen Namutamba, the Minister of Tourism and Heritage for Busoga Kingdom, emphasized the festival’s significance in placing Jinja and the entire Busoga region on the international map. With attractions such as Itanda Falls, Busowooko Falls, and the Source of the Nile, the festival effectively highlights Busoga’s tourism potential, making it a must-visit destination for travelers.
Beyond tourism, Nyege Nyege has evolved into a symbol of unity and cultural exchange. It brings together individuals from diverse corners of the world to celebrate music, dance, and art, promoting a sense of togetherness. Namutamba noted that the event serves as a platform where Busoga Kingdom’s rich heritage intersects with modern artistic expressions.
The festival’s impact isn’t limited to culture and community; it plays a vital role in local economic growth. The festival provides opportunities for local artists, craftsmen, food vendors, and even motorcycle taxi operators (“bodaboda” riders) to benefit from the influx of visitors. Acknowledging this, Busoga King William Wilberforce Nadiope Gabula IV has directed that a stage be dedicated to local artists, allowing them to showcase their talents and network with international peers.
Peter Okocha Kasolo, the Mayor of Jinja City, urged everyone to participate in this year’s event, recognizing Jinja’s standing as Uganda’s tourism hub. Aly Allibhai, CEO of Talent Africa and one of the festival’s organizers, shed light on the decision to relocate the festival from Itanda Falls, where it was held last year, to a more accessible venue due to road network challenges.
Since its inception in 2015, Nyege Nyege has been instrumental in promoting both local and international music talents while inspiring emerging artists. This year’s lineup includes performers from South Africa, the United Kingdom, Nigeria, and more. Special tickets will be provided to festival-goers, promising an unforgettable experience for all attendees.
