Mayuge: A concerning situation is unfolding at Kigandalo Secondary School in Bunya East County, Mayuge District, where the school administration has reportedly become increasingly politicized.
This has allegedly created a hostile environment for both students and staff, undermining the school’s educational mission and stifling independent thought and critical discussion among students.
According to Mr. Musa Kamya, the former LC3 chairperson of Kigandalo Subcounty, “The situation at Kigandalo Secondary School is dire. The politicization of education is not only undermining the school’s mission but also threatening the future of our children.”
Kamya, who wrote to President Yoweri Museveni highlighting the issue, emphasized that “Education should empower young minds to think freely and engage with diverse perspectives, not coerce them into conformity with political ideologies.”
In his letter to the President, dated March 17, 2025, Kamya stated that teachers at the school are reportedly using classroom time to promote the political agenda of Hon. James Kubeketerya, MP for Bunya East County, pressuring students to show their support.
It is alleged that this has led to the suspension of students who do not align with Kubeketerya’s views, fostering an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.
Kamya urged President Museveni to take swift action to address the situation, stressing the importance of maintaining a non-political educational environment where all students and staff feel safe and respected.
As he noted, “The implications of this politicization are dire. It may lead to a generation of students who are less equipped to become informed, active citizens.”
The situation highlights the urgent need to ensure that education in Uganda remains a beacon of hope and empowerment for future generations.
“Moreover, the pressure on teachers to ‘worship’ Hon. Kubeketerya in order to retain their positions exacerbates the problem. This creates a toxic work environment where educators cannot focus on their primary responsibility—providing quality education. The morale of the staff is likely to diminish, leading to decreased performance and increased turnover, which further harms students’ learning experiences,” Kamya’s letter reads in part.
Meanwhile, Kigandalo Secondary School has a strong focus on education and leadership development, aiming to empower young minds. With over 765 students enrolled, the school strives to provide quality education and maintain a safe and respectful environment for all.
The administration has reportedly been working to address concerns around politicization and ensure that the school environment remains non-political and inclusive, demonstrating its commitment to its core values and mission.
Additionally, the school has been proactive in managing health concerns, such as the recent mpox outbreak, ensuring that reported cases were treated and recovered successfully.
Overall, Kigandalo Secondary School’s dedication to providing quality education and promoting a positive learning environment remains crucial in shaping the future of Uganda’s youth.
