Mr Bilali Ndooli (late) and his dear Fatuma Nangobi, on November 13, 1993, received a newborn baby whom they couldn’t believe he would be a vocalist.
The old boy (OB) of Mukokotokwa primary, and Irundu Modern Secondary School where he attained his “O” and “A” levels, the artiste is also an alumnus of Mutai ss and St Peter’s Namulikya where he enjoyed his S.2 and S.3 classes respectively.
A grade III primary teacher from Bishop Wills Core Primary Teacher’s college in 2016, Mande realized his ability of impressionism and entertainment when he joined Valeria Media and Vocational Institute in Mbale for a national diploma in Journalism and Media studies.
He disliked teaching as he could not see any future in the profession because of his little salary.
“I was frustrated with education. I was recruited at Smart Junior Primary School in Magaga, but I was given shs50,000 as my salary. I could not believe it was the money I was getting as a teacher,” narrates Captain Jinja in an exclusive interview with Busoga Today.
The singer, to practice his journalism career, joined Baba FM for his internship training after he was inspired by the Jinja North MP Isabirye David Aga, who was then a news anchor. Baba fm could not give a chance to a young man who had no experience on the microphone to practice his skills and later resorted to joining Kiira FM.
The opportunity to sit behind a microphone befell him on Kiira fm when Ritah Nalukwago (the then Kiira’s news editor) gave him news scripts to anchor on air.
“It was my first time to go onair. All news anchors were not around on that day, and the editor (Ritah Nalukwago) gave news scripts. I anchored the news for only four minutes and it probably lead to the loss of Nalukwago’s employment at Kiira for giving an amateur change to enter the studios,” he said.Mande became a good Lusoga News anchor and he worked for Kiira fm since 2019.
In 2020, the radio-man entered Target Records to record his first tune “Love Yaffe” which was criticized by colleagues in the media industry because of the vague beats. The criticism paved the way for his popularity as many yarned to see a radio presenter who released a substandard song.
“I really felt it. My colleagues in radio could not see my song around. I thought of quitting, but my heart developed strength,” he said.
With now ten songs and only two successful videos, Captain Jinja on top of Kim Pawa and Acidic Avocoz who write him songs, praises one Smart Dee who has since counselled and guided him to ensure his success.
Narrating his interesting and challenging experiences, Captain Jinja will never forget his shs500,000 he paid Mr Zatabu to shoot his Pungulu video. The video could not be premiered and played at any media platform as it was at a low standard.
“I felt dying when I looked at the video that covered up my five hundred thousand shillings. I counted it a loss, and I left the footage and the whole video project with him,” he added.
He, however, says the two industries (both media and music) are leading him to a successful life given that social capital has so far achieved.
“I am just challenged with management, but if I can get one to undertake that role, my career will be revamped to a significant level,” he asked for management and empowerment.
The singer appeals to legends to fairly treat and nurture the young and upcoming who are still in the struggle to penetrate through the industry.
