Bugweri: The director of Save for Health Uganda, Fredrick Makaire, has urged Busoga residents to embrace community health insurance “twedhandabe” aimed at reducing the mortality rate among low income earners.

Makaire, who is also eying the Bugweri county MP seat, was speaking during a one-day workshop held at the Bugweri district headquarters recently.

“The project aims at ensuring that every member in community has access to health services and can be able to overcome any health threats which has been a challenge due to lack of funds at the village level,” Makaire said.

“Every member will contribute a certain amount of money to a pool and the amount will be suggested and approved by the members at a given level that’s to say village level, parish level or at a sub-county level,” Makaire added.

He said the members will each receive a membership card which they will present to access medical services.

Makaire said several residents have lost property in exchange for health but all this will be history thanks to the community health insurance scheme.

“The scheme will improve the life expectance of residents since they will conveniently access medical services,” he said.

He added on that several people are wallowing in endless loans because of borrowing funds to access medical services and some have been forced to flee their homes.

Busoga sub-region is ranked among the poorest sub-regions in the country with the later contributing at least 14% to the country’s total poverty.
