JINJA — Several fire fighters from eastern region are battling a terrifying inferno that is razing down the Supplies Department of Kakira Sugar Limited, threatening the main sugar mill as well as the multi-billion shillings distillery.
The fire that started shortly before 8pm overpowered Kakira’s firefighter department, calling for backups from Jinja City and Iganga. Kakira’s firefighters have often been called on to boost Jinja Central Police during big fires but this time it was the reverse.
Busoga Today, reporting from the scene, saw as many as four firefighter tracks as well Kakira’s equipment battling the blaze that had already engulfed the entire two-storey stores.
The Supplies Department is Kakira’s biggest stores where every procured utility that can be housed is first kept before they are distributed to final sections. From stationery to computers and fridges to bycycles and motorcycles, the stores is a billion-shillings warehouse.
There are fears that the fire could spread to the main sugar mill just 30 metres away from the fire-consumed stores which would be more tragic considering that the highly flammable distillery for spirits and gins is within the sugar mill premises.
Busoga Today has not been able to establish the cause of the fire.
