Headship of a school is a crucial matter in the education sector. It is a sensitive matter where capability of the successful candidate must be considered since the head of centre is the accounting officer who over sees the running of the school activities. For schools with big population, the responsibility is most likely to be doubled and a sober intelligent competent individual with a good track record is preferred. In any government school, the founding body, the board of governors, the parents, leaders, association has a say in who the ministry has to post. Other stakeholders like teachers, parents…

Younger Busoga: Busoga, with a population of above four million about 10% of Uganda’s total population, majority of whom are below 31 years, is faced with high poverty levels mainly due to low house hold incomes. That situation is despite the natural endowment of good climate and vast expanses of good arable land all surrounded by big water sources: Rivers Nile, Mpologoma and Lakes Kyoga, Victoria among others. Going by the belief of taking an advantage from every misfortune one has, this semi-illiterate youthful force can be turned into a good productive labour resource if guided into sustainable profitable and…

Uganda is a sugar surplus producer, with local consumption currently at about 400,000 tonnes. Over the last 10 years, the industry has been expanding production by nearly 15% per annum on average, culminating into production of 622,243 tonnes of sugar in 2021, and anticipated production for 2022 in excess of 770,000 tonnes. As of 2021, 34 licenses had been issued by the government for sugar production, with the majority concentrated in Busoga region, eastern Uganda. Most of these mills rely on outgrower farmers to supply sugarcane, rather than on planted nucleus estates. This has led to instability in the sector,…

The increasing popularity of DNA tests has generated a mix of excitement and apprehension among Ugandans. While some individuals have embraced the opportunity to verify biological relationships, others have faced emotional distress and financial burdens when test results indicate that their children may not be biologically related to them. This has sparked a debate among locals, with varying opinions on the implications of DNA testing. Children’s rights activists argue that DNA testing can be an abuse of children’s rights and have long-term negative effects on their well-being. Mr Anthony Mula presents strong points in the keynote article. I, however, would like to underscore the importance of an integrated approach to the development question; with specific attention to the Parish Development Model and how it can fit in the Busoga development agenda. Back in 1900s, Busoga’s economy was outstanding and growing steadily with cotton production, hospitable citizens, railway line transportation, values of the Owen Falls Dam, and free fishing activities on the fresh water bodies. The industrial park at Jinja made the town one of the leading commercial centers in Uganda which dispersed the benefits to the whole…

Youth bargain to be heard, but are they responsible enough to call attention to the nation’s challenges, if given a chance to sit at the high table? It is difficult to remember when Busoga wasn’t the portrait of Uganda’s devastating statistics; in maternal and neonatal mortality, in poverty, teenage pregnancies, education et-cetera. Busoga Health Forum, in an endeavor to better the statistics laid a strategy on shaping the future of Busoga Region as it took initiative to empower the youths on personal responsibility, one of the cardinal disciplines to the success and development of a nation. Charity begins at home!…

In this three-part opinion I look at the Busoga through the times and how two giants, Semei Kakungulu and Daudi Kintu Mutekanga contributed to its growth and development. Any history of Busoga, which excludes the simultaneous analysis of the contributions of two men whose times coincided, Semei Kakungulu and Daudi Kintu Mutekanga, is unlikely to be useful and a distortion of the truth. Unfortunately, most history of Busoga has been written by people who were immigrants to Busoga, and whose interest was, or has been, to put their group at the centre of Busoga’s historical dynamics. Kakungulu concentrated on opening…
