In a  press conference held at the Sana Country Resort Hotel in Iganga district, on 24, April 2024, Retired Gen. Mugisha Muntu, the president of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT), addressed the media on the state of affairs in Uganda and the path forward for his party.

Retired Gen. Muntu began by outlining ANT’s progress in various districts, including Bugweri, Namayingo, Mayuge, and Luuka, where strategies are being formulated for the upcoming 2026 elections. However, his remarks quickly turned to the actions of President Museveni, whom he accused of exacerbating the country’s challenges.

One of the key issues raised by Retired Gen. Muntu was the recent creation of assistant Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) by the President’s office, which he deemed as wasteful expenditure and a demonstration of Museveni’s apprehension about the 2026 elections. General Muntu also criticized the appointment of General Muhoozi as the Chief of Defense Forces (CDF), alleging that it flouts legal procedures. He urged General Muhoozi to step down from his military position if he aspires to become president, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the rule of law.

Moreover, Retired Gen. Muntu highlighted the dire state of service delivery in hospitals, schools, and infrastructure, particularly in the Busoga region. He lamented the government’s failure to address these fundamental issues, attributing the region’s economic challenges, such as fluctuating sugar prices and poverty, to excessive taxation and neglect.

Basakaana Hannington, the Eastern Uganda coordinator for ANT, echoed  Muntu’s sentiments, urging Basoga residents to critically evaluate political parties and support leaders who demonstrate integrity and commitment to their promises. He emphasized Muntu’s leadership qualities and called for unity behind him as ANT prepares for the 2026 elections.
