The World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with Koica and the government of Uganda, will renovate hospitals in five districts of the Busoga sub-region. The districts benefiting from this program include Mayuge, Buyende, Iganga, Bugiri, and Kamuli.

Mayuge is one of the districts selected for the “Refurbishment of Health Facilities Program.” This program will renovate six hospitals in Mayuge. The facilities to be upgraded include Bwonda Health Center II HC III, where the maternity ward will be completed; Kityerera HC IV, where a new patient waiting shade will be constructed, and the laboratory will be expanded; Baitambogwe HC III, where the maternity ward will be completed; Bugoto Health HC II, where the OPD/maternity ward will be renovated; Kigandalo HC IV, where the OPD will be renovated, rainwater harvesting systems will be installed, and the operation theatre will be upgraded; and Wabulungu Health Center III, where the OPD/maternity ward will be renovated.

The contract for the renovations was awarded to Clayford Company. On August 6, 2024, Mayuge district officials handed over the projects to the contractors, who are expected to complete the work within four months. During the site handover ceremony, Assistant RDC Umar Ntogona, representing RDC Madoi Eleija and Deputy RDC Haminsi Nagaya Kiganira, thanked the leaders of Mayuge for their collaboration with the NRM government, which enabled the WHO to include Mayuge in this program. Ntogona also cautioned the contractors to avoid substandard work and urged them to cooperate with the local communities. He encouraged the public to support the contractors by providing goods and services to help them succeed and improve their livelihoods.

David Zijja, District Councilor of Malongo and Secretary of Social Services in Mayuge District, who represented Mayuge LC V Bishop Frank Tibagendeka, remarked that while the journey had been challenging, the district had ultimately achieved success. Kenneth Kabalu from the World Health Organization, along with contractor Kilenzi Clayford, pledged to deliver outstanding work on the projects.
