The Victoria Pearls are set for their second stint at the T20 Women’s Global Qualifiers, in Abu Dhabi from April 25th to May 7th. Back in 2018, Uganda made their debut in the T20 Women’s Global Qualifiers in the Netherlands.
Leading the charge is Janet Mbabazi, who commands a squad of 15 players, with Rita Musamali serving as her able assistant. Behind the scenes, Lawrence Ssematimba spearheads the technical team, supported by Deus Muhumuza.
“At the helm of the Victoria Pearls, it’s both a privilege and a joy to lead this exceptional group of players. I anticipate embracing this role wholeheartedly and steering the team towards triumph. Despite our setback of not winning a medal in the recent African Games, we’ve transformed that disappointment into determination”, remarked Team Captain Janet Mbabazi during the team’s flag-off ceremony in Kampala.
Uganda finds itself placed in Group A alongside opponents like Scotland, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and the USA. The teams vary in rankings, with Sri Lanka leading the pack at 7th position, trailed by Thailand (12th), Scotland (14th), the USA (20th), and Uganda (18th).
The top two contenders from each group will progress to the semifinals, with an opportunity to secure a coveted berth at the 2024 T20 Women’s World Cup in Bangladesh later this year. While Uganda has previously encountered Scotland and Thailand, they will cross paths with the USA and Sri Lanka for the first time in this tournament.
Before their inaugural clash against Scotland, Uganda is scheduled to engage in warm-up matches against UAE on the 21st and Vanuatu on the 23rd. Their group stage itinerary includes matchups against the USA and Thailand, followed by a highly anticipated faceoff against Sri Lanka. Notably, the fixtures against Scotland and Thailand are slated for night-time play, introducing a fresh challenge for the Victoria Pearls.
“Competing under floodlights for the first time injects a new level of exhilaration into our game. While it might evoke a tinge of nerves, we are eager to embrace the challenge and exhibit our mettle under those luminous beams. It presents an opportunity for us to evolve and unite as a team, and we are eagerly anticipating immersing ourselves in this invaluable experience,” expressed Mbabazi.
