In a bid to showcase the untapped tourism potential of the Busoga region, the Explore Busoga campaign has been launched, inviting travelers to delve into the historical sites and natural wonders that define this scenic part of Uganda.
Led by influential figures and dignitaries from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, the week-long campaign kicked off in Jinja City, drawing attention to iconic landmarks such as the Source of the Nile, Jinja’s Uganda Hotel and Tourism Training Institute (UHTTI), Railway Museum, and the New Nile Bridge.
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Eastern African Affairs, Rebecca Kadaga, emphasized the campaign’s goal of revitalizing historical sites and bolstering the tourism sector’s contribution to the region’s socio-economic development.
Tourists embarking on the Explore Busoga journey will have the opportunity to explore the majestic Itanda and Busowoko Falls in Jinja, the Kyabazinga Budumbula and Igenge palaces, the towering Kagulu Rock in Buyende district, and the historic Bishop Hannington site in Kyando Mayuge district.
Mayor Peter Okocha Kasolo of Jinja City highlighted the ongoing redevelopment efforts at the Source of the Nile, aimed at enhancing the visitor experience and attracting more tourists. The modernization of this iconic site is poised to elevate Jinja City’s appeal as a premier tourist destination.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Tourism, Martin Magara, commended the government’s commitment to the tourism industry and lauded the development initiatives underway, including the transformation of the Crested Crane Hotel to house UHTTI. Magara encouraged domestic tourism and praised the efforts to equip and enhance tourist training centers like UHTTI.
With construction nearing completion at the new UHTTI site, scheduled for handover by June, the Explore Busoga campaign continues to uncover the region’s hidden gems, inviting both locals and international visitors to experience the allure of Busoga’s cultural heritage and natural beauty.
