Uganda Cranes wrapped up their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign with a solid 1-0 victory over Congo in Brazzaville, ending the journey on a high note.
The only goal of the match came in the second half, when Travis Mutyaba scored in the 55th minute. Mutyaba, playing for Bordeaux, was in the right place at the right time. He met a well-placed corner from Denis Omedi, turned past his defender, and fired the ball into the net, leaving Congo’s goalkeeper with no chance.
This win was a much-needed boost for Uganda, especially after their disappointing 2-0 loss to South Africa in their previous match at home. Coach Paul Put made a few changes to the team, bringing in fresh faces like Calvin Kabuye, Isaac Muleme, and Ronald Seekiganda. The new lineup performed better, showing that the team had depth and could bounce back from setbacks.
Although Uganda won the match, they finished second in Group K. South Africa secured the top spot after a 3-0 win over South Sudan. However, both Uganda and South Africa had already qualified for the 2025 AFCON, which will be held in Morocco.
One of the positives for the Cranes during the qualification process was their impressive away form. They were unbeaten on the road, drawing 2-2 with South Africa in Johannesburg and winning matches in Juba and Brazzaville.
