Jinja: A tragic incident occurred in Buwenge rural sub-county, Jinja district, on Friday, February 21, 2025, when Dan Mugeri, a 30-year-old suspected thief, took his own life while in police custody at Kagoma sub-county police station.

Mugeri was accused of stealing Shs. 500,000 from his employer in Bukomansimbi district in January 2025 and had been on the run since.

He was arrested by the area LC 1 Chairperson and the General Secretary before being handed over to the police. However, at around 10:30 AM, he reportedly used his trousers to take his own life.

“He used his trousers to end his own life,” confirmed SP James Mubi, Kiira region police spokesperson.

Residents said Mugeri had been emotionally distressed and had expressed suicidal thoughts since fleeing Bukomansimbi.

Mubi told Busoga Today that “The crime scene was examined by the area Magistrate, Her Worship Betty Lukuse, along with a team of detectives.”

According to Mubi, the police, in collaboration with mental health specialists, plan to launch a sensitization campaign on suicide risk assessment to help detect early warning signs of depression and suicidal tendencies.
