Luuka: On Sunday, December 8, 2024, the people of Luuka District gathered at Bwamba Busiiro Primary School in Waibuga Sub-County to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Bwana Yeko, a renowned educationist and community leader in the history of Luuka and Uganda in general.
The event, organized by his family and spearheaded by Don Vincent Bwana, the Head of Protocol at the NRM Secretariat, was attended by dignitaries and local leaders who paid tribute to his remarkable contributions to Uganda’s education sector and community development.
In a message delivered by Hon. Hajat Minsa Kabanda, the Minister for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni praised the late Bwana Yeko as a “true hero” who dedicated his life to education and grassroots leadership.
“The late Bwana Yeko was a visionary leader whose work as the founding Headmaster of Summit View Army Primary School and KCC Primary School Kamwokya uplifted many lives. His contributions to education and community service continue to inspire us all. Let us honor his memory by ensuring every child receives an education,” the President stated.
President Museveni also urged the people of Luuka District to keep children in school and avoid child labor on sugarcane plantations, emphasizing that education is the key to a prosperous future.
Bwana Yeko’s illustrious career in education began with his roles as the founding Headmaster of Summit View Army Primary School in Upper Kololo and KCC Primary School Kamwokya, both established in the early 1990s. He later served as a District Education Officer (DEO), where he worked to improve access to quality education before retiring early.
His commitment to leadership extended beyond education. He also served as the NRM Chairman and LC1 Chairman of Kamwokya Village B from 1990 until his passing on September 2, 2017. His work in community mobilization and governance left a lasting impact.
During the event, Don Vincent Bwana, the late Bwana Yeko’s son, called on the President to establish a Bwana Yeko Memorial Technical Institute in Luuka District. He noted that the institute would honor his father’s legacy and equip young people with vocational skills to drive development in the region.
“It would be sensible and educational to honor this notable man with a memorial institute,” Don Bwana remarked.
Don Vincent also expressed gratitude to President Museveni for fulfilling his pledge to construct the Luuka-Kamuli Road, which is set to commence soon. He requested that the government prioritize other deteriorating roads in Luuka to enhance connectivity and support economic activities.
Retired Bishop Michael Kyomya of Busoga Diocese led prayers during the commemoration, urging believers to seek peace in Jesus Christ and emulate Bwana Yeko’s life of service, faith, and dedication.
The commemoration served as a celebration of Bwana Yeko’s enduring impact as an educator, leader, and visionary. Residents of Luuka District pledged to uphold his values by prioritizing education and community development.
The event highlighted the power of dedication and service in transforming lives, ensuring that the late Bwana Yeko’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
