Jinja: Traffic along Jinja-Iganga highway paralysed in the night of Saturday, May 4, following an accident that involved three motor vehicles at William in Kakira, Jinja district.
The tragedy involved a Tata [lorry] UBJ 609K travelling from Iganga side heading to Jinja reportedly overtook another Tata lorry UAS 123T, which was unsuccessful. The unsuccessful sugarcane truck allegedly ended up sitting on Toyota Premio UAW 297E that was travelling in the opposite direction.
Four occupants of the white Premio seriously injured and nursing wounds in different hospitals. Among the injured include Mercy Ankunda, a 24-year-old medical student attached to Kampala International University – Ishaka campus, Rukia Nangobi, 45, Juliet Livingston 30 both residents of IdudiBugweri district.
The above three victims are being admitted at Nakavule hospital in Iganga district, while the fourth causality [Livingston], a resident of Idudi – Bugweri district, is getting treatment at Jinja regional referral hospital.
Police said on Sunday that efforts are underway to establish the exact cause of the accident. SP James Mubi, Kiira region police spokesperson, confirmed that no death cases were registered in the accident as alleged by residents.
“The driver of the Tata [lorry] UBJ 609K travelling from Iganga side heading to Jinja side unnecessarily overtook another Tata lorry UAS 123T, which was unsuccessful. The lorry ended up sitting on a Toyota Premio UAW 297E that was travelling from the opposite direction,” Mubi told our reporter Sunday afternoon.
He said they (police) are ongoing to trace for the drivers of the three vehicles as they purportedly vanished into thin air after the tragedy at round 10pm.
“Efforts are ongoing to trace these these drivers because they were not found at the scene on the night of May 4, 2024 when the accident occurred,” Mubi added.
Police encourage all drivers to observe the highway code and have self-discipline because forced discipline has far reached bad consequences on their record service as drivers.
Mubi says every bad conduct exhibited by the driver on the road is highlighted in the software system of road safety across the country.
