National Resistance Movement (NRM) officials gathered at Jinja City Hall on Wednesday to strategize for the upcoming celebrations of the National Resistance Army (NRA) Liberation Day. This vibrant annual event, observed on January 26, aims to honor the efforts of the NRA revolutionists, led by President Museveni, in bringing peace and stability to Uganda after overthrowing previous governments in 1986.
This year’s celebration will be hosted in Jinja city at Wakitaka playground in eastern Uganda. The stakeholder meeting, attended by dignitaries such as Third Deputy Prime Minister Rukia Isanga Naakadama, Minister for Presidency Milly Babairye Babalanda, State Minister Persis Namuganza, Resident District Commissioners, Members of Parliament, NRM chairpersons, and local political leaders, emphasized the need for massive participation in the anticipated event.
Babalanda, leading the National Organizing Committee, highlighted the significance of the day, urging Busoga citizens to celebrate the achievements of the ruling NRM. She called for effective mobilization to demonstrate strong support for President Yoweri Museveni, particularly in Busoga.
“The president still doubts his support in Busoga, but we need to demonstrate massive support on the liberation day,” stated Babalanda.
Preparations include providing participants with ample food and free drinks, with plans for 1300 kilograms of rice and 1300 kilograms of meat. Minister Babalanda commended the National Chairman’s office for spearheading mobilizations and encouraged Basoga to raise their challenges to be addressed by the president through Jinja RDC Mr. Richard Gulume.
Third Deputy Prime Minister Nakadama emphasized teamwork and solidarity among Busoga citizens when demanding regional development. She expressed concerns about poor roads in Jinja and surrounding areas, urging leaders to utilize government resources effectively.
In light of Busoga’s voting patterns in the 2021 general elections, where the region leaned towards the opposition, this celebration is seen as an opportunity to reaffirm their relationship with President Museveni.
Hajji Abubaker Walubi, the NRM boss of Iganga district, urged the president to address the controversial issue of swamps, where leaders advocate for utilization while RDCs implement the directive to vacate swamps.
The celebrations, starting on January 15, will include a medical camp focusing on eye treatment at various health centers, supported by Bazungu Ev, a Germany-based nonprofit organization.
