Acohort of young boys and girls from Nawanyago Technical Institute landed on a big opportunity of flying to Russia to conduct their industrial training in skills education.
The lucky students are pursuing national certificates in different vocational disciplines, including tailoring and garment design, hairdressing and cosmetology, building and construction, among others.
Located at Nawanyago village in Kamuli district along Jinja- Kamuli road, the institute is one of the vocational centers of learning promoting skills education in Busoga sub-region. Vocational skills are currently dominant and emphasized among the young people, especially semi-literates to desist from looking for employments but instead become self employers and job-creators.
Ms Rose Martha Kumwiza, the principal of the institute, informed Busoga Today that the compass administration is uncertain about the exact number of confirmed students flying to the Asian country.
“We have not yet confirmed who is going and who is not while the fixed schedule is also not confirmed yet,” she said. According to a list shared by the Ugandan ambassador to Russia, H.E Moses Kizige, a group of 15 students were nominated to fly to Russia.
The students include: Joan Gonza, Leticia Mukyala, Sylvia Nangobi, Beth Namuwaya, Janet Naigaga, Zainha Mukyala and Prossy Bamuwaki. Others are Arahuman Kiwudhu, Joel Atuma, Latifu Wakabi, Elisha Waako, Anthony Philipo Babinga, Micheal Kyakulaga, Edrine Kintu and Latifu Balanze.
In an interview with this writer, Janet Naigaga, an 18-year-old resident of Namwendwa town council in Kamuli district, pursuing a national certificate in Tailoring, was overjoyed for appearing on the list of lucky students.
Naigaga now feels the value of education that is enabling her to fly to a foreign country, a dream to many individuals. “I was overwhelmed when the principal broke the good news. I didn’t expect to be among the lucky ones. It will actually be my first time to move out of the country and even getting closer to an aeroplane,” Naigaga narrated.
Naigaga, who swiftly processed the express passport that costed her Shs520,000, urged young people to consider education as a vital component of life, calling parents to refrain from ignoring their children that would drop out of primary or secondary schools.
According to Joel Atuma, 23- year-old resident of Budondo in Jinja city Northern division, several new skills shall be attained from Russia given the standard and modern equipment.
Atuma, a student of building and construction has since the breaking of the interesting development, had significant prayers to remain on the list of lucky students.
He said; “I got the passport from Mbale at Shs600,000 and am now ready to fly.” While, Prossy Bamuwaki, a student of Fashion and Garment Design is in agony for she may not fly after giving birth to a baby boy. “I couldn’t go to process the passport because I had just delivered a baby boy. Of course I feel well bad that I am missing out on the opportunity because I cannot leave behind my two-months old baby,” noted Bamuwaki, a resident of Nawantumbi in Nawanyago subcounty Kamuli district.
Zainha Mukyala, 22, of Fashion and Design who has not yet gotten a passport is eagerly waiting for the historic moments at Entebbe Airport. She said the passport process is underway although she doesn’t own a national identity card. “I have so far paid shs.100,000 for the passport, I don’t have a national ID but I went to NIRA and got a NIN,” stated the 22-year-old Mukyala who expects to study new skills and as well get new friends in Russia. When contacted for a comment, the H.E Kizige, who posted the announcement about the placements in Busoga Consortium WhatsApp Group, was unresponsive.
