Jinja: The Kiira Regional Police have taken into custody Edmond Mpaata, the Nakaseke District Fisheries Officer, on allegations of being involved in the kidnap and subsequent murder of an unidentified individual. The incident, which occurred in early August 2023, has raised serious concerns over the actions of Mpaata and his alleged accomplice, Joseph Sunday Gesa, a local watchman from Jinja city.
Reports suggest that Mpaata and Gesa conspired to abduct the victim, subjecting them to wrongful confinement and torture. The victim was allegedly taken to a trench near Busoga College Mwiri in Kakira town council, Jinja district. The severe injuries sustained during this ordeal are believed to have led to the victim’s demise.
Kakira police station, responding to the incident on August 18th, dispatched Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) to conduct a thorough investigation. The victim’s body bore visible signs of torture, including cuts on both arms and a neck tied with trousers. The surroundings indicated a suspicious back-and-forth movement around the trench, adding to the mystery.
Joseph Sunday Gesa, the watchman allegedly involved, confessed to his role in the horrific incident. He claimed that Mpaata led the operation that resulted in the death of an adult male. Police detectives are now intensifying their investigation to establish the full extent of the incident and all those involved.
SP James Mubi, the spokesperson for the Kiira Regional Police, revealed that a postmortem examination of the deceased’s body will be conducted on Tuesday, August 22nd, by pathologists from Jinja Main Hospital. This procedure aims to determine the exact cause of death. Mubi also cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that such actions are illegal and subject to police action.
In a separate effort to combat criminal activities, the Kiira Regional Police conducted a targeted operation on Monday, apprehending 28 individuals from the Mafubira area and 16 suspects from Bugembe. These individuals were caught consuming opium, a substance often linked to various crimes such as rape, defilement, theft, and physical altercations. The authorities suspect these areas to be harboring notorious criminals and have pledged to intensify both day and night patrols.
Since June 2023, eighteen suspects have been remanded at Kirinya prison on charges of aggregated robbery, as the Kiira Regional Police under the leadership of SSP Rogers Sseguya continue their efforts to maintain law and order in the region.
