Luuka district is abuzz with excitement as preparations for the swearing-in ceremony of the Luuka parliament gain momentum. The highly anticipated event is scheduled for October 7, 2023, at the Luuka District headquarters, and it promises to be a grand affair. The chief guest for this auspicious occasion will be none other than the esteemed Chief of Luuka Chiefdom, HRH Willington Nabwana.

In a bid to celebrate and reinforce the rich cultural and traditional heritage of Luuka, the Prime Minister of Luuka Chiefdom, Owek. David Lwigo Iggulu Isabirye Ngulungu, recently extended invitations to the leaders of traditional healers in Luuka district. This meeting served to inform them about the forthcoming ceremony and discuss the cultural aspects surrounding it.

During the gathering, Prime Minister Isabirye Ngulungu elucidated on the dress code for the day. Men are expected to don a navy blue coat, complemented by black shoes and a kanzu, a traditional garment. Women, on the other hand, are anticipated to wear a Gomes, although the final decision regarding the color is still under deliberation.

Luuka’s Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Waiswa Paul Bwenibwabwiko, emphasized the inseparable connection between culture and politics. He noted that even politicians often seek spiritual guidance from shrines, believing it brings them the victory necessary for leadership roles. Bwenibwabwiko also urged traditional healers to consider rearing the chickens and goats they are sometimes offered as payment for their services, as a means to alleviate poverty.

In a show of support for the upcoming event, the witchdoctors present at the meeting contributed 500,000 Ugandan Shillings to facilitate its smooth execution. They called on the community to rally behind “Tabingwa’s Day” for the betterment of Luuka, as the total budget for the ceremony stands at a substantial 270 million Ugandan Shillings. Additionally, they resolved to convene again on Sunday, September 10, 2023, to elect a committee responsible for overseeing the event’s on-ground preparations.

As the day draws near, Luuka is poised to showcase its rich cultural tapestry, demonstrating the deep interconnection between culture, tradition, and the governance of this vibrant district. The swearing-in ceremony promises to be an event filled with cultural significance and historical importance for the people of Luuka.
