The final day of the 2024 Girls Schools Cricket Week in Soroti witnessed an intense battle between Light SS and Olila High School. Light SS emerged victorious, winning their first title in a nail-biting match against Olila High School.

In the semifinals, Olila High School dominated Sacred Heart SS, securing a comfortable win by 9 wickets. Meanwhile, Light SS faced tough competition from Jinja SS but managed to edge past them by just 1 wicket.

The final match between Light SS and Olila High School was highly anticipated, as Olila High School aimed for their fifth title while Light SS sought their maiden crown. Light SS, known for their strong defense, faced Olila High School, who showcased an all-round performance with bat and ball.

Olila High School won the toss and chose to bowl first. Light SS struggled to reach 76/9 in their allotted 20 overs, aided by 29 extras conceded by Olila High School. In response, Lorna Anyait’s impressive knock of 38 runs kept Olila High School in the chase. However, Light SS’s slow bowling tactics proved effective, leading to Olila High School falling short by three runs, thus securing the title for Light SS.

Several players were recognized for their outstanding performances throughout the tournament. Lorna Anyait from Olila High School was awarded the Player of the Series, while other notable awardees included Mwbali Naume from Masaka SS for Best Batter, Jimia Mohammad from Olila High School for Best Wicketkeeper, Achan Zita from St Mary’s Madera for Best Bowler, and Christine Aguti from Light SS for Best Fielder.

Following the tournament, a squad of 25 players was selected for the U-19 girls’ training camp, aiming to represent Uganda at the U-19 Girls World Cup Qualifiers in Rwanda. Players from various schools, including Olila High School, Jinja SS, Masaka SS, and Light SS, were among those selected.

The week-long tournament featured 16 schools from six regions in Uganda and was hosted by the Soroti Cricket Academy, sponsored by Sky View with Renu-mesh and RUBIS as partners.
