Kamuli: Mr. Moses Kawubanya, who narrowly escaped death after his wife attacked him and cut off his genitals, is in a coma and seeking financial aid for plastic surgery.
The 40-year-old man, whose main source of income was teaching at Kayembe Primary School in Namwendwa Subcounty, Kamuli District, is requesting at least Shs10 million to fund his surgery at Nsambya Hospital.
Mr. Kawubanya’s ordeal occurred on June 10, 2024, when his wife, Suzan Namuganza, attacked him with a sharp knife, causing severe genital injuries. The incident took place in the early hours at their home in Nabirumba, Kamuli District. Namuganza suspected her husband of infidelity and carried out a retaliatory attack, leaving Kawubanya with life-altering injuries.
Though he has physically healed, Kawubanya says the stigma has been overwhelming. The community has cruelly nicknamed him “The Half Man,” a label he finds deeply distressing. Even at work, as a primary school teacher, he faces daily stigmatization.
“One day, a group of women surrounded me and started mocking me. I couldn’t do anything, even though I had feelings,” he said.
After the attack, Kawubanya was rushed to Kamuli General Hospital before being referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further treatment. He spent a month in the hospital before being discharged.
“While in Mulago Hospital, I was informed that government-sponsored plastic surgery would only be available in 2027, so I was advised to seek treatment at Nsambya Hospital. The treatment costs Shs10 million,” said Kawubanya, who was even denied a loan of Shs2 million to help cover his expenses.
Mr. Kawubanya currently uses a catheter to urinate, a painful and distressing process. He also alleges that his colleagues in Kamuli have distanced themselves from him since the incident.
A father of five, with the youngest being just four months old, Kawubanya is struggling to provide for his family. His wife, Suzan Namuganza, has since been sentenced to 15 years in Kirinya Prison.
