The Jinja Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Mr Darius Nandinda, is concerned with the leaders in the Busoga region for evading the ongoing National Agricultural Education Show in Jinja City

Nandinda, who was officially launching the third edition of the education show on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, questioned why the leaders have kept away from the significant phenomenon taking place within the region.

“The local leadership has to be engaged in these issues. But I don’t see the town clerk here! Where is the city mayor? Where are the leaders of the Jinja district and the leaders of Busoga?” Nandinda asked.

The furious RCC condemned political leaders for prioritising what he termed irrelevant events, leaving out meaningful occasions like the agriculture show. He described such leaders as “the most igniter of confusion in development.

“Why are you narrowing this thing to be like a graduation of a nursery school. People get serious!” The unhappy RCC wondered.

However, Mr. Nandinda expressed disappointment with some people who have reportedly ignored agriculture, the economic backbone of Uganda, as it significantly contributes to the country’s GDP. He claims that such people are being influenced by the inexperienced political actors whom he accuses of not understanding the relevance of the agriculture sector.

“The politicians should come and attend to this agriculture and get educated on agriculture instead of misleading people out there. They always take the podium on critical issues instead of letting technicals guide us. Every time politicians, even those that are not educated, confusing society!” he said.

He also lashed the educated Ugandans who only remained luxurious without practising agriculture. He said they have nurtured their children only with comprehensive English without the knowledge of traditional farming and neither modern innovations in the crucial sector.

He stated that “Everyone in this country is fighting hard to ensure they make their children speak much English. Society has collapsed because of the ignorance of agriculture. Society must be defined, but you find young people who don’t know a banana plantation.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Nandinda commented Uganda National Farmer’s Federation (UNFFE) for collaborating with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, and the ministry of education and sports for championing the agriculture education exhibition that is exposing the young people to the importance of agriculture.

On the allegations of relocating the agriculture show to Bukalasa in Luwero district, Nandinda said action should be taken against the persons behind the purported plans, highlighting that they don’t understand. According to the RCC, the claimed group has been contacting several schools, discouraging them not to participate in the show.

“I hear those against this show are led by a certain commissioner in the ministry of education. He is called George Mutekanga. They have been calling schools to evade the show! What type of officers are those? Such people should be worked upon by the Ministry,” Mr. Nandinda added.

He applauded the first lady and also the minister of education and sports Janet Kataha Museveni for intercepting the relocation of the education show. Efforts were joined to influence the maintenance of the annual event in Jinja’s show grounds located at the Source of the Nile.

The 2024 education, which emphasizes the need for young innovations and transforming agriculture for national prosperity, ends on June 29, 2024.
