Jinja: In a tragic turn of events, a Jinja city resident lost his life after an excessive celebration of his sports betting win. The deceased, identified as Isima Kalende, a 40-year-old bodaboda rider from Mpumudde in Jinja, reportedly died from alcohol intoxication while reveling in his Shs. 300,000 betting victory.
Kalende’s jubilation followed a 0-0 draw between Bala and TNS in a sports match. His accurate prediction had earned him a substantial sum, and he decided to celebrate in style.
It’s believed that his celebration was partly fueled by the need to forget the recent heated Arsenal-Manchester United match, where passionate fans engaged in spirited banter. In the company of friends and companions, Kalende spent his evening at the Lyagoba bar and lodges in Mafubira, indulging in both local and modern alcoholic beverages.
Tragically, Kalende reportedly succumbed to alcohol poisoning, marked by repeated vomiting. These circumstances have raised suspicions of foul play, leading to a police investigation. SP James Mubi, the Kiira region police spokesperson, confirmed that a death inquiry file had been opened at Jinja Central Police station to determine the exact cause of Kalende’s demise.
While investigations continue, Mubi took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of responsible gambling. He urged betting companies to guide their clients on maintaining a sense of moderation and financial responsibility. Excessive jubilation, he warned, could lead to unfortunate consequences, highlighting the need for winners to exercise caution and prudence in their celebrations. The case serves as a stark reminder that even moments of triumph should be handled with care.
