Timber dealers along Spire Road in Jinja City are counting significant losses following a mysterious fire that reportedly destroyed their businesses.
The blaze, whose source is yet to be established, gutted a timber shop on Sunday night, causing distress among traders in the area.
Tabliq Garage, a timber shop, was severely damaged around midnight. The fire was reported by a nearby watchman, who promptly contacted the Jinja Police Fire Department.
Efforts by fire managers to contain the blaze were futile, as the fire had already consumed the wooden goods in the store.
Police confirm that the fire outbreak was controlled by the Jinja Fire Team with support from Nytil Factory.
“We immediately responded with support from Nytil Factory, and we managed to save important items, including eight motor vehicles, the timber workshop itself, two other timber workshops, and a flat house in the neighborhood,” said James Mubi, Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson.
He added, “We have so far registered fifteen people as victims of the fire outbreak.”
Betty Nakato, one of the victims, said, “My business was worth Shs7 million, but all my furniture has been burned.” She is calling for support from the government.
The officer noted that the police faced challenges accessing the scene, as the Fire Brigade couldn’t reach the burning stores due to the densely packed houses.
“We have been advising people that whenever constructing a residential or commercial building, whether in a city or village, proper access must be provided. This is crucial for emergencies, such as fires or ambulance services,” Mubi said.
The Jinja Fire Brigade Department continuously educates different stakeholders, including petrol station owners, schools, factories, and private homes, on effective fire response, according to Mubi.
Mubi emphasized the importance of individuals having skills in fire containment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, according to local rumors.
A comprehensive investigation into the fire is ongoing, and a detailed report will be produced.
