The boda-boda riders express their deep concerns over the stringent conditions imposed by corporate companies offering motorcycle loans. Many riders, already struggling with low income, find themselves in precarious situations due to the allegedly unfair practices of these lending companies.
Simon Musobya Eria, the chairperson of boda-boda riders in Jinja city, sheds light on the challenging stereotypes faced by his fellow riders. He reveals instances where companies can repossess motorcycles even when riders are close to completing their loans, citing delayed payments as grounds for seizure with no avenue for recourse.
One company, in particular, demands a significant deposit of shs600,000 and imposes weekly payments of shs90,000 over a two-year period. The riders argue that the fixed and pressurizing installment structure accumulates to an exorbitant total of shs9.96 million.
Desperate for resolution, Mr. Musobya calls for a direct meeting with President Museveni to address the economic challenges plaguing the boda-boda sector. He emphasizes the need for the president’s intervention to bring about meaningful change within the industry.
The riders further advocate for reduced charges for motorcycle driving permits, arguing for fees that align with the economic status of riders. Mr. Musobya stresses that equitable permit fees would contribute to the legitimacy of the transport sector, allowing riders to fulfill their duties lawfully.
Despite assertions to the contrary, Musobya clarifies that the boda-boda sector is not against President Museveni and is not engaged in political activities. Their primary role, he insists, is to provide essential transportation services to areas inaccessible by foot.
