Kamuli district’s National Unity Platform (NUP) finds itself embroiled in internal conflicts, with accusations of betrayal and corruption causing a rift among its leaders. The controversy revolves around Twahil Waiswa, the former mayoral race flag bearer in Kamuli municipality, who stands accused of pocketing UGX 80 million from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).

In a media briefing held at the NUP offices in Kamuli municipality, party registrar Julius Amuvin stated that Waiswa had received the money, alleging secret meetings with NRM officials in Kamuli. The revelation came to light when foot soldiers became aware of Waiswa’s undisclosed agendas.

Amuvin expressed disappointment, stating, “It is heartbreaking that our comrade joined the NRM; he invited some of our members and announced his resignation from the struggle.”

Waiswa, the accused, vehemently denied the allegations, asserting his commitment to the cause of a new Uganda. He refuted claims of joining the NRM, considering the accusations as defamation against his political career. Waiswa even mentioned facing financial challenges, emphasizing his dedication to the opposition movement.

Adding to the turmoil, Faizal Kibengo, claiming to be the Kamuli municipality NUP chairperson, announced the dismissal of Moses Bigirwa, a prominent NUP member. Kibengo cited reasons such as undermining Busoga Kingdom, attempting to disrupt the recent Kyabazinga Royal wedding, and engaging in scandalous deals that tarnish NUP’s image.

Kibengo’s actions align with party principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s decision to sack Bigirwa for allegedly violating party principles. However, Badiru Kavuma, the Kamuli district NUP boss, criticized Kibengo’s accusations, labeling them as baseless. He emphasized that Kibengo lacks the authority to terminate a member’s party membership.

According to Kavuma, Kibengo was previously dismissed from office due to misconduct, and his recent actions are misleading a section of NUP members. Kavuma affirmed that Bigirwa remains an active participant in NUP, dismissing Kibengo’s credibility and describing him as mentally challenged.
