Bugweri: SSP Diana Nandawula, the spokesperson for the Busoga East regional police, has confirmed that one individual was killed in a tragic accident involving two motor vehicles along the Iganga-Bugiri highway.
The deadly accident occurred on Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Busowobi village in Bugweri district along the busy highway when a fuel tanker with registration number ZG 2941 collided with a cement truck with registration number UBG 347D.
It is reported that the fuel tanker was coming from the Iganga side before experiencing a head-on collision with the cement carrier from Bugiri.
The fuel tanker immediately caught fire, leading to the loss of one life, who was not identified, according to Nandawula.
“We are investigating the circumstances under which the two vehicles collided and caught fire, resulting in the death of one unidentified female and injuries to one male,” the officer said.
“The police fire brigade swiftly rushed to contain the fire, but the victim had been destroyed beyond recognition,” she added.
Nandawula said the deceased’s body was conveyed to Iganga Main Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem, while one of the drivers is under medical care at the same hospital.
She said investigations and comprehensive inquiries are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the deadly incident.
Similarly, Jinja City experienced a tragedy on July 14, 2024, at around 4:30 pm when a commuter taxi (drone) caught fire, allegedly killing three passengers.
According to reports, the taxi, believed to be Mbale-bound, met its fate along Clive Road West when it had just set off from Jinja Taxi Park to Kampala.
The police have not issued any statement about this accident, but several passengers were seriously injured.
