The Director of Traffic in Uganda, Niwabiine Lawrence, met with Boda Boda riders in Luuka District to inform them about road safety rules and discuss ways to prevent accidents on the roads.
The meeting took place at the district headquarters in Luuka, at the RDC office, and was attended by several senior security officials from Luuka and Busoga North.
In his speech, Director Niwabiine emphasized that many of the accidents on the roads are caused by Boda Boda riders who fail to follow traffic rules and regulations. This, he explained, prompted him to leave his office and travel to Luuka to educate the riders on the proper road safety practices that could help reduce accidents.
The Director also thanked Hajji Kirunda Faruk for his commitment to his country and highlighted the traffic challenges in Luuka, stressing that such meetings allow traffic authorities to better assist the people of Luuka in addressing the rise in road accidents.
The meeting was attended by security officials from both Luuka and Busoga North, as well as Boda Boda chairpersons from various stages across the district. The attendees also took a moment to pray for the soul of Aliyinza Gladys, who tragically died in an accident on June 27, 2024.
Nagaya Jaberi, the Chairperson of the Luuka District Boda Boda Fraternity, thanked Director Niwabiine for the positive changes he has implemented in traffic management, which have brought peace between traffic police and the public. Nagaya also expressed gratitude to Hajji Kirunda Faruk for his contributions to the development of Luuka and urged the Boda Boda riders to collaborate with him for the continued development of Luuka District, Busoga, and Uganda at large.
The ceremony was also attended by the Busoga North RPC and Luuka RDC, Hajjati Hawa Ndege Namugenyi, who pointed out that Luuka lacks taxis and relies heavily on Boda Boda riders to transport people, even on long routes. She thanked the Director for removing excessive roadblocks in the district and called for specialized training for Boda Boda riders on road safety. This, she said, would help make Luuka a model district in Busoga for traffic law enforcement.
Luuka LC V Chairman Wakaze Simon also expressed his thanks to the Director for his visit, stating that the meeting would go a long way in reducing accidents in Luuka District.
