Dinah Wambi, a 24-year-old is now the Guild Prime Minister of the Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Jinja campus. She took oath as the new campus students’ leader after obtaining a win from Musa Kilikolaki and Jovia Naluyima.
The third year student of Bacherlors in Business Administration, Wambi, officially received the Guild office on July 17, 2024, in an enthusiastic handover ceremony externally organized at Dirifika Country Resort in Njeru municipality.
In the hotly contested race held on May 5, 2024, the determined and outspoken Wambi realized her political strength when she garnered 167 votes, against Musa Kalikolaki who came second with 140 votes while Naluyima obtained 102 votes in the third position.
The swearing in session was presided over by Counsel Wilberforce Bwambale in accordance with Article 88 of the guild constitution 2023 as amended.
Dr Veronica Mukyala, the Director of MUBS in Jinja, expressed confidence in the leadership of the female Guild, saying that her future is really bright.
In her message delivered at the event by the deputy director Dr Moses Kisubi, Dr Mukyala applauded the emeritus students’ leader Rev Emmanuel Kireri for the transparency and accountability exhibited during his ruin as the Guild.
“I thank the outgoing leadership for preparing satisfactory accountability. I commend Pastor Emmanuel for his committee and being hardworking, proactive, consultative, and visionary,” Dr Kisubi said while delivering his boss’ speech.
“You are not leaders by titles, but you’re there to provide solutions to problems. If you can’t solve problems, then you will be a misfortune to your voters.” he said.
Dr Veronica disclosed that the campus management took the decision to decentralize guild trainings, and effective July 22, guild trainings will commence.
Meanwhile, the outgoing Prime Minister said God enabled him to serve to the expectations of the students, management of the campus, and among other stakeholders. He highlighted his achievements during his tenure, where they acquired 30 functional computers following his request to the Principal MUBS through the Director, Dr Mukyala.
“I praise Dr Mukyala for extending Wifi for the learners that eased internet services. I stand here to appeal to the incoming his successor to make a follow-up on the letter detailing the tuition waiver for the Prime Minister,” said Rev Kireri.
He cautioned his successor on the need to follow standard operating procedures and work with relevant offices in securing guild funds. He added that listening to students’ issues and making informed decisions is part of good leadership.
The event’s guest speaker SP James Mubi commended Dr Mukyala and the campus administration for providing a conducive environment that fosters smooth co-existence between the students and management.
The police officer explained the importance of preparing adequate leaders who are ready to take up real societal challenges in society.
He further appreciated the tireless efforts of the management in ensuring the growth and popularity of the campus that boosts 5000 students.
“Today I stand here to thank the outgoing leadership for representing the interests and leading students well on top of demanding for their rights. The new guild, avoid diluting leadership with placing selfish interests ahead of life of compassionate service,” he said.
He added that the young generation of leaders should phase out the bad practice where some people occupy offices without leadership skills, which leads to the abuse of office and misuse of power.
But, the incoming Prime Minister Dinah Wambi pledged effective leadership and mobilization students towards academic causes.
Wambi is the fourth Prime Minister after Gorret Mutesi (2021), Shafiq Lubanga (2022), and Rev Pastor Emmanuel Kireri (2023/2024)
