The Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF) continues to foster collaboration with local communities in Luuka district, as demonstrated during the launch of the 43rd Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations week. Hon. Milly Babirye Babalanda, Minister for Presidency, commended the UPDF for its concerted efforts in combating crime and promoting development hand in hand with the populace.
Addressing attendees at the district headquarters, Minister Babalanda highlighted the pivotal role of the UPDF since its inception in 1981. She underscored the transformative impact of the army’s engagement with citizens, emphasizing the strides made in enhancing economic growth and curbing corruption across Uganda.
The Tarehe Sita celebrations, slated for February 6th, 2024, will see the UPDF engaging with communities in various activities aimed at bolstering mutual trust and collaboration. While the national event will be held in Bugweri district, the decision to host celebrations in every district within Busoga region underscores the commitment to grassroots engagement.
Brig. Gen. Rwashande Emmanuel, representing CDF Gen. Wilson Mbasu Mbadi, outlined the planned activities, including health camps and initiatives focused on fostering economic empowerment and mindset change.
Hon. Prof. Muhammad Lubega Kisambira, Chairman of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, commended the UPDF for upholding discipline among civilians. He urged small-scale landowners to prioritize food crops over sugarcane cultivation to mitigate food insecurity, advocating for increased value addition in the sugarcane industry.
MPs Hon. Luke Kyobe Inhensiko and Hon. Kisa Stephen Bakubalwayo lauded the NRM government’s efforts in community development. They urged swift action on infrastructure projects, including the Iganga – Luuka to Kamuli road, to spur economic growth and alleviate poverty.
The absence of a district hospital in Luuka drew attention, with stakeholders calling for urgent intervention from the government to address healthcare needs. Despite challenges, speakers expressed optimism in the NRM government’s commitment to fulfilling pledges outlined in its manifesto, ensuring tangible progress in Luuka’s development agenda.
In a poignant plea, the Luuka monarchy emphasized the significance of tarmacking the Iganga- Luuka Kamuli road to catalyze economic prosperity in the region.
Amidst calls for prioritizing healthcare infrastructure and infrastructure development, stakeholders acknowledged the transformative impact of sugarcane cultivation on the local economy, urging continued support for the industry.
