Namutumba District marked Sanitation Week today under the theme “Sanitation for Dignity and Inclusiveness.” The event, held at Kikalu Health Center II in Nangonde Subcounty, highlighted significant improvements in home sanitation facilities.
District Health Officer Dr. James Kirya presented encouraging statistics, revealing that access to basic sanitation facilities increased from 59% to 70% following a sanitation and hygiene campaign. This achievement reflects the health department’s ongoing efforts to promote better sanitation practices.
Dr. Kirya emphasized that most diseases affecting Namutumba residents are preventable, stressing the need to prioritize sanitation and hygiene in order to reduce healthcare costs and enhance overall well-being.
The event was organized in partnership with development organizations, including Food for the Hungry and the Red Cross. Notable attendees included LC5 Chairperson David Mukisa, Sanitation Officer Godfrey Kayigwa, and Resident District Commissioner Fredrick Bangu.
In his address, RDC Fredrick Bangu noted that high healthcare expenses hinder household development. He urged the community to adopt proper sanitation and hygiene practices as a way to reduce these costs.
District Health Educator Ronald Balisanyuka encouraged residents to take responsibility for maintaining their home health facilities, while Environment Officer Francis Kyakulaga commended the community for their efforts in establishing such facilities and urged them to sustain these improvements.
The Sanitation Week celebration reflects Namutumba District’s strong commitment to improving hygiene practices—ultimately fostering dignity, inclusiveness, and better health outcomes for all.
Local residents expressed gratitude for the health campaign and pledged to maintain sanitation in their households, contributing to a cleaner, healthier community.
