As the 61st anniversary of Uganda’s Independence approaches, Busoga is gearing up for a unique and exhilarating celebration that promises to captivate both locals and visitors alike. The heart of this celebration lies in the Independence Color Run, an event that has gained immense popularity in the region. Set against the backdrop of the culturally rich Jinja, the event is set to draw crowds from Busoga and beyond, offering a vibrant and fun-filled way to commemorate this significant day.

Scheduled for Independence Day 2023, the Independence Color Run is not just a mere run; it’s an untimed 5km color fun run and a festive extravaganza. The main highlight is the 5km activation, where participants are showered with colorful powder at every kilometer as they walk, jog, dance, or ride their way to the finish line. Unlike traditional races, the emphasis here isn’t on being the fastest; it’s about embracing the joy and spirit of unity. The event is known to award the last place winner, emphasizing the sense of togetherness over competition.

The choice of colors in the event holds deeper symbolism, as Anthony Jermaine, the lead organizer, explains. “Color is a universal language that speaks to our diversity and shared humanity. We might come from different backgrounds, but we’re all part of the same human race,” he says, referencing Lucky Dube’s song lyrics, “Different Colors, One People,” which inspired the event’s theme.

While the Independence Color Run is undoubtedly a festive occasion, it’s also a platform for meaningful contribution. Each year, the event partners with a local charity to give back to the community. This year, the chosen charity is ICT4 Education, which aims to enhance digital literacy in rural Busoga through a mobile computer lab.

Cultural exchanges play a significant role in the event. Attendees can immerse themselves in cultural food and drinks, engaging games, lively competitions, captivating performances, and, of course, vibrant color throws. The festivities commence with pre-activities at 12 pm, followed by the run at 3 pm, and culminate in an adult-only night program from 7 pm onwards. With unique games, top DJs, and electrifying live performances, participants are bound to have a memorable time.

Color kits for the event are incredibly affordable, priced at 30,000/= for adults and 20,000/= for children aged 14 and under. Each color kit includes an entry pass, an official t-shirt, a bottle of mineral water, a sachet of color powder, a race bib, and a pack of crisps. Pre-booking for color kits is recommended, as they won’t be available on the day of the event. An “entry only” pass is also available, costing 5,000/= if pre-booked and 10,000/= at the gate. Organizers have tailored special packages for companies, NGOs, religious organizations, and schools, ensuring that everyone can participate.

For more information or to secure tickets, visit the event’s official website at www.color.ug/run or contact 0700 677 340 via call or WhatsApp.
