In a groundbreaking move, the Busoga Consortium for Development has launched a large-scale community project to promote soya bean cultivation in the Busoga region. This initiative aims to revolutionize agriculture and empower farmers in the region.

The project, which is part of the Village Action Model (VAM), focuses on soya bean farming and livestock rearing. The consortium’s team, led by Director General Mula Anthony, has been engaging with local farmers, particularly in Mayuge District, providing them with essential knowledge and resources to maximize their yields.

During these engagements, LC5 Chairperson Bishop Frank Tibagendeka commended the consortium’s efforts, stating, “This project is a game-changer for our community, offering new opportunities for farmers to thrive and contribute to national food security.”

The initiative has received widespread support, with Mayuge Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Ms. Sarah Kasadha, pledging her full backing.

“This is a testament to what collaboration can achieve. I am committed to working alongside all stakeholders to make this vision a reality,” she said.

Director General Mula Anthony highlighted the project’s potential to enhance food security, create employment, and improve livelihoods across the region.

“We are not just cultivating crops; we are cultivating a brighter future for Busoga. This initiative will help transform livelihoods and create sustainable agricultural solutions,” Mula emphasized.

As preparations for the planting season gain momentum, local farmers are encouraged to take advantage of the resources and training provided under this initiative to boost their productivity.

This project marks a crucial step toward fostering sustainable development in the region, ensuring long-term benefits for local farmers and agribusiness stakeholders. With the Busoga Consortium for Development at the helm, the region is poised for a transformative era of agricultural excellence.

Last year, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of East African Community Affairs, Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, launched the Busoga Consortium for Development’s (BCD) Village Agricultural Model (VAM) initiative on August 4, 2024. This groundbreaking project aimed to enhance agricultural production and transform lives in the Busoga sub-region and Uganda at large.

Kadaga, accompanied by esteemed dignitaries, including Rt. Hon. Rukia Isanga Nakadama, Busoga Consortium’s Director General Anthony Mula, and Mr. Zhang Xiaogang, team leader of FAO-China Uganda, flagged off the initiative at Mashaga Village in Mayuge District and Busana Village in Kamuli District.

The VAM initiative was piloted by BCD in collaboration with China Agricultural University (CAU) and the Office of the Vice President. This holistic approach focused on community engagement, collaboration, and sustainable agricultural practices to drive development in Busoga.

As the patron of BCD, Kadaga played a pivotal role in commissioning VAM-selected villages in the Busoga sub-region. Her commitment to agricultural development and community empowerment has been instrumental in driving positive change in the region.
