The Bishop of Busoga Diocese, Dr. Paul Samson Naimanhe Mukembo has condemned the grabbing of land belonging to schools founded by the Church of Uganda in Busoga. The diocese is protesting the alleged land grabbing, particularly targeting schools built on church land.
Bishop Naimanhe reveals that the Church of Uganda launched a campaign to establish land titles on these schools, particularly around Busoga. He made the remarks while officiating an aluminum event at Wanyange Senior Secondary School in Jinja City over tye weekend.
“We realized that ‘clevers’ are targeting the land belonging schools founded by the church. When did we reach there?” Naimanhe wondered.
The bishop’s comments come after a recent incident at Wanyange Girls Senior Secondary School, where land grabbers allegedly threatened to occupy the school’s land.
Bishop Naimanhe urged all stakeholders to support the Church’s efforts to protect its land and schools. He has also appealed to the government to intervene in the matter and prevent further land grabbing.
Jinja is known for rampant land grabbing with brokers and seasoned politicians, taking the lead in fraudulently occupying properties belonging to other individuals.
“We need to work together as the church. Let’s join the efforts to make this a success. Let’s secure our land,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, during the event, the school’s administration and the Wanyange Old Girls Students Association (WOGA) launched initiatives to improve the school’s infrastructure, including the construction of modern water tanks.
The President of WOGA, Pamera Kamusiime, appealed for support for the school’s projects, including the construction of more water tanks.
“As old girls of this mighty school, we want to see our schook progressing. We are steering this water tank project to curb water shortages,” she said.
The Headteacher of Wanyange Girls School, Deborah Basekanakyo, commended WOGA for the efforts to improve the school’s infrastructure.
The Busoga Kingdom has also become involved in the matter, with the Minister for Education in the kingdom, Owek Nantale Nasabu, urging students and the community to work together to promote education in the region.
WOGA elected HRH Jovia Mutesi, Inhebantu wa Busoga, as their patron. The inhebantu would support the initiatives, promoting the education of a girl child.
