In a thrilling showdown at Kakindu Stadium in Jinja city, Busiki Chiefdom etched its name in history as the champion of the 2023 Busoga Masaza Cup, defeating Butembe 1-0. The victory, sealed with a single goal in the 72nd minute by Kenneth Ndifuna, marked Busiki’s debut in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals of the prestigious annual tournament.

Despite deploying star strikers like Alimansi Bidondole, Butembe, the 2017 champions, couldn’t break through Busiki’s solid defense. The match attracted a vibrant crowd, including the Kyabazinga of Busoga, His Majesty William Wilberforce Nadiope Gabula IV, the kingdom premier, Dr. Joseph Muvawala, Second Deputy Prime Minister Osman Noor, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries.

The tournament, organized by the Ministry of Sports, aims to promote the talent of Busoga’s youth through football. Dominantly sponsored by MTN Uganda, the 6th edition was aptly named MTN Busoga Masaza Cup, recognizing the strong relationship between Busoga Kingdom and the corporate giant, MTN.

In addition to the coveted trophy, Busiki Chiefdom secured a substantial cash prize of UGX 12 million along with other accolades. Butembe, as the second runner-up, received UGX 8 million, while Kigulu, the third runner-up, and Bugabula, the fourth-placed team, walked away with UGX 6 million and UGX 4 million, respectively. The tournament’s success highlights the thriving football culture in the Busoga region, fostering talent and community spirit.
