Football fans witnessed an exciting battle as BUL Football Club grabbed a hard-fought victory against Vipers, propelling them to the summit of the Uganda Premier League table. The electrifying match marked a momentous return of football to Namboole Stadium.
The pivotal moment of the game came just before the half-hour mark when Jeromy Kirya found the back of the net, to secure the crucial goal for BUL. Kirya’s decisive strike, orchestrated by an impeccable low cross from Alex Kitata, left Vipers’ goalkeeper Alfred Mudekereza helpless, sealing the fate of the match.
Despite relentless pressure from Vipers, particularly evident in Patrick Mbowa’s close header from a corner, BUL’s resilience held firm. Tom Ikara, BUL’s goalkeeper, faced a nerve-wracking moment when Allan Okello unleashed a shot, only for Vipers’ Fumador Asiwome to squander the opportunity by shooting over the bar from close range.
The victory propelled BUL to the top of the league standings with 49 points, narrowly edging out Kitara by a single point. Kitara, held to a 1-1 draw by Mbarara City earlier in the week, now trails closely behind.
On the other hand, Vipers, despite their valiant efforts, found themselves slipping to third place with 46 points. However, with a game in hand over both BUL and Kitara, Vipers remain within striking distance of reclaiming the top spot.
Notably, this match served as one of two test matches held at Namboole Stadium, signaling the Football Federation of Uganda’s (FUFA) ambitions to secure CAF approval for the refurbished stadium to host international matches.
