Kamuli: A 40-year-old businesswoman has been arrested by the Police in Kamuli district for allegedly attempting to murder her 60-year-old husband by cutting off his genitals.
According to the Police, the suspect, only identified as Rehema, attacked her husband, Richard Masanka, while he was sleeping at their home in Busoigo cell, Kasoigo ward, Northern Division in Kamuli Municipality.
“The victim was rushed to Kwagala Medical Centre in Buwengempya and later referred to Kamuli General Hospital,” said ASP Micheal Kasadha, Regional Spokesperson for Busoga North.
The Police have condemned the attack and urged couples facing conflict to seek counseling or legal redress instead of resorting to violence.
“We remain committed to ensuring that we deal with such acts expeditiously. We urge couples to avoid acts of violence that destroy lives and families,” said ASP Kasadha.
The Police are still investigating the motive behind the attack.
“We condemn such acts of violence and we shall ensure that justice is served,” said ASP Kasadha.
The incident has sent shockwaves in the community, with many calling for an end to domestic violence.
This is not the first incident of its kind in Kamuli District. A 35-year-old woman, Kevina Nabirye, was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder her husband, Bwamiki Mathis, 37, by cutting off his genitals.
The incident occurred on February 7, this year, at their residence in Buguwa village, Kawaga Parish Balawoli Subcounty, Kamuli District.
Kamuli Chief Magistrate Court presided over by Paul Owino sentenced Nabirye, who was a mother of four to 20 years in jail after she pleaded guilty of chopping off her husband’s genitals.
In July last year, a 34-year-old woman, Suzan Namuganza, was sentenced to 15 years in jail for cutting off her husband’s genitals.
The victim, Moses Kawubanya, a pastor at Nabirumba Pentecostal Church in Nabwigulu Sub County, expressed dissatisfaction with the sentence, describing it as “lenient.”
“As far as I am concerned, 15 years for the assailant who caused me a permanent scar and lifetime psychological torture is quite unfair,” said Kawubanya, 45.
Kawubanya stated that he would seek redress in a higher court to ensure Namuganza receives a harsher punishment.
The incidents have raised concerns about the prevalence of domestic violence and the need for harsher punishments for perpetrators.
“We condemn such acts of violence and urge anyone facing domestic violence to seek help,” Kasadha, a regional Police spokesperson said.
The Police have urged the public to report any cases of domestic violence, promising to take swift action against perpetrators.
