In the early hours of Friday, July 19, 2024, Aramanzan Lutalo, 19, Tenywa Muzamiru, and Stephen Kalulu, 60, were attacked by unidentified individuals at 5 a.m. in Kyamagwa cell, Mafubira, Jinja City. The assault led to the tragic death of Lutalo.

The ambush involved three suspected men armed with pangas, who were moving on a motorcycle without a number plate. They ruthlessly hacked the residents before fleeing with their property. Tenywa and Kalulu, who were severely injured and bleeding profusely, were rushed to GlenZ Dignity Hospital in Mafubira. Lutalo was taken to St. Nick Clinic in Mpumudde, where he succumbed to his injuries.

SP James Mubi, the Kiira region police spokesperson, stated, “Aramanzan Lutalo sustained severe injuries on the head and later succumbed to his injuries. Tenywa Muzamiru sustained serious injuries on the head and a ruptured left eye. He has been referred to Jinja Main Hospital for emergency surgery on his eye. Stephen Kalulu, according to the in-charge at GlenZ Dignity Hospital, is getting out of danger and will possibly be discharged today or tomorrow.”

An eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, reported seeing the attackers cutting the victims. His alarms attracted neighbors, prompting the attackers to flee on their motorcycle.

In response, the police quickly deployed a police dog to the crime scene. The dog led them to two rented rooms belonging to Wilber Mayanja, a boda boda rider, and Waswa Morishid, a scrap dealer, both residents of the same area in Mafubira. The duo were apprehended.

Lukia Namakula, the landlady of the suspects, was also taken in for questioning at Mafubira Police Station.

“Searches in their rooms yielded exhibits such as a panga, hammer, marijuana, and scissors found inside jackets. The motorcycle, registered as UED 157N, has been impounded pending URA verification to ascertain ownership,” Mubi said.

The suspects also reportedly took mobile phones and an unspecified amount of money from the deceased, Aramanzan Lutalo, and Tenywa Muzamiru. Serious tracking efforts are ongoing to establish the whereabouts of other culprits.

Detained at Mafubira Police Station, the apprehended suspects are charged with murder and aggravated robbery. The police are using a multispectral approach (MSA) to jointly prevent and fight crimes. Additionally, intensified joint security patrols and community sensitization programs are ongoing.
