Buikwe: A tragic road accident in the early hours of February 16, 2025, at Mbiko along the Jinja-Kampala Highway in Buikwe District claimed the lives of three individuals.

According to eyewitnesses and police reports, a Mitsubishi Fuso truck, registration number UBF 164D, was traveling from Kampala to Jinja when it lost control due to excessive speed. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a trench in Mbiko Trading Centre.

“It is alleged that the Mitsubishi Fuso truck, registration number UBF 164D, driven by a one Lubega, was transporting sacks of maize from Kampala. Upon reaching Mbiko Trading Centre, he lost control due to high speed, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and plunge into a trench,” Ssezibwa Regional Police spokesperson SP Hellen Butoto said in a statement.

Police identified the victims as John Lubega, 40, the driver; Robert Kamoga, 29, the turnman; and Innocent Mbabazi, 16, a passenger. All three succumbed to their injuries at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, with SP Butoto confirming that police are leading the inquiry.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations.

“Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased,” police said.

The bodies of the deceased were transported to Jinja Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination, while the wreckage of the vehicle remained at the scene.
