NATIONAL: Butaleja district is lagging behind in development because of the poor road network, Bunyole West MP Godfrey Mutibwa has said.

Mutibwa said government’s failure to tarmac the road from Namutumba through Butaleja has greatly undermined the area’s development.

“If the road is constructed, it will not only economically uplift Butaleja in terms of marketing its rice from Doho Rice Scheme but will also attract more investors and help the district catch up with other districts in the region,” Mutibwa said.

President Yoweri Museveni pledged to tarmac the said road in the 1990’s but up to date, the pledge has never been fulfilled, leaving the residents frustrated.

“Government has injected a lot of money in the rehabilitation of Doho Rice Scheme but because of the poor road, we can’t transport our rice to better markets neither can we attract investors,” Hon Mutibwa said.

Mutibwa was speaking during the belated Women’s Day celebration at Bingo Primary School in Nawanjofu sub-county, Butaleja district organized by the district Woman MP, Hon. Florence Nebanda, and presided over by the State Minister for Defense and Veterans Affairs Hon. Oleru Huda Muhaya last week.

During the same event, the district chairperson, Boly Michael, asked government to elevate Tororo Municipality to city status. And elevate Busolwe Hospital to referral status.

Hon. Nebanda commended NGOs and Butaleja District Local government for empowering women and girls in Butaleja district.

Hon. Oleru Muhaya said the event should not be treated as a day for women to eat and dance, but it should be a day for women to reflect on what they have achieved in terms of economic progress, professionalism and investment rights.

The event was attended by the civil servants and district leaders from Butaleja district, religious and cultural leaders, schools and
