Jinja: Tragedy struck in Buwenge Town Council, Jinja District, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 9PM, when a sugarcane truck overturned, leaving three people seriously injured. The driver of the truck, registration number UBD 023V, lost control, causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times along the Jinja-Kamuli road.

The three crew members—Zefa Kazingiri, 30, Byansi Sulaiman, 25, and Ibra Wadembule—all residents of Buyengo Town Council, were rushed to Buwenge Health Center IV for medical attention.

In a statement on Thursday afternoon, SP James Mubi, Kiira Regional Police spokesperson, said the truck was heading toward Jinja and was fully loaded with sugarcane when the accident occurred.

“Traffic police from CPS Buwenge swiftly responded to the incident and rushed the three victims to Buwenge Health Center IV for further medical management,” Mubi said.

According to police reports, Byansi Sulaiman succumbed to his injuries on Thursday, while the driver remains at large. The Kiira Regional Police Command has issued a statement cautioning drivers to observe speed limits and avoid reckless overtaking.

They also reminded road users to avoid interfering with traffic flow and announced the reinforcement of traffic checkpoints to curb road accidents.

“All road users must adhere to traffic regulations. The static and mobile checkpoints in place are working effectively to ensure a measurable reduction in road carnage,” Mubi stated.
