Jinja: The Buwenge Police Station in Jinja district is currently detaining two law enforcement officers who allegedly witnessed the death of Paul Gusango, a suspect they were attempting to arrest.

Police authorities have also intensified their search for Sharifah Katono’s brothers, who reportedly assaulted their brother-in-law (Paul Gusango) in the presence of these officers.

According to reports, on July 7, 2024, at Kalebera village, Buwenge Rural Sub-county, Jinja district, Gusango was severely assaulted by his furious in-laws. This incident followed ongoing marital issues, including extramarital affairs with Katono, who is the sister of the assailants.

Earlier, on June 28, 2024, Katono had filed an assault case against her husband, Paul Gusango, at Buwenge CPS. The 30-year-old man had a history of initiating violence upon returning home.

James Mubi, the Kiira region police spokesperson, explained that on July 7, 2024, Katono’s brothers followed up on the case, prompting two unnamed police officers to attempt Gusango’s arrest. However, their efforts were thwarted when the brothers allegedly assaulted Gusango severely.

“The two officers are currently in custody, and their identities are withheld pending thorough investigations. Despite their attempt to apprehend the suspect, he resisted violently and fled, leading to the assault by the in-laws,” Mubi stated.

Efforts by the police to restrain the assailants were reportedly unsuccessful. Gusango was rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment but later transferred to Buwenge General Hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Sadly, on July 9, 2024, he succumbed to his injuries.

Mubi confirmed that the police have initiated prosecution-guided investigations, leveraging information from the detained officers. Meanwhile, the search for Sharifah Katono and her brothers continues.

Initial reports suggest that before his death, Gusango had accused his wife, Sharifah Katono, of engaging in extramarital relations with another man. This emotional conflict reportedly sparked frequent family disputes, according to Mubi.

Jinja District LC5 Chairperson, Moses Batwala, has intervened in the matter, commending the police for apprehending their own officers allegedly involved in Gusango’s death.

Batwala emphasized the importance of bringing the fugitive suspects to justice for the sake of maintaining law and order in the community.

The police have issued a caution to married couples and those in relationships, urging them to respect their partners and refrain from aggressive behavior towards loved ones.
