Jinja: Police in Jinja City on Monday, September 16, 2024, revealed that Mr. Edmond Mpaata, the Fisheries Officer of Nakaseke District, was re-arrested following his release on charges of kidnapping and alleged murder.

In early August 2023, Mpaata reportedly teamed up with Joseph Sunday Gesa, his local watchman from Jinja City, and kidnapped Alex Kigenyi, whose details are still unknown. The duo allegedly murdered him after wrongfully confining and torturing him.

The victim was reportedly dumped in a shrub near Busoga College Mwiri in Kakira Town Council, Jinja District. The severe injuries he sustained during the ordeal eventually led to his death, according to the police.

Kiira Regional Police spokesperson, ASP James Mubi, told Busoga Today on Monday morning that Mr. Mpaata, who was initially released during investigations, was re-arrested after some shocking new evidence came to light.

“Prime suspect, Mr. Edmond Mpaata, the Fisheries Officer of Nakaseke District, was rearrested on Thursday last week. He is charged with murder,” Mubi said.

He also stated that Mpaata’s alleged accomplice is still on the run, but police are working hard to track down Gesa.

According to investigations, the suspects used a motor vehicle, UAL 998P, to transport the victim’s body to Kakira.

“We have conducted prosecution-guided investigations, including DNA analysis. DNA samples were collected from the scene where the deceased was allegedly tortured and murdered,” Mubi explained. “We also did a forensic DNA analysis on the victim’s body.”

The suspect was arraigned before the Jinja Grade One Magistrate’s Court and was remanded until October 17, 2024, when he will appear for further mention.

Police have also issued a public reminder: “You don’t have the authority to kill anyone. Always use the proper authorities to resolve any disputes. This helps us all live in a society that respects the law and each other.”
