Buikwe: A suspected thief met a gruesome fate in Buikwe district as an angry mob took the law into their own hands, lynching the individual believed to have stolen a television set. The chilling incident unfolded in Bunyagira village, Buikwe subcounty, Buikwe district, sending shockwaves through the community.

The suspect had allegedly broken into an unidentified resident’s home, making away with a television set. The news of the burglary quickly spread, and an enraged mob swiftly formed to apprehend the thief. In a harrowing act of vigilante justice, the suspect was pelted with heavy stones and beaten with large sticks until he succumbed to the brutality.

His lifeless body was then discarded by the roadside in Madudu village, serving as a grim reminder of the gruesome events that unfolded. It was an area local councilor who alerted the authorities, leading to a prompt response from the Lugazi police.

SP Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa region police spokesperson, condemned the actions of the furious residents, citing the recovery of the deadly weapons used in the lynching. Butoto stressed that taking the law into one’s hands is not only unlawful but also undermines the justice system.

The deceased’s body was transported to Kawolo hospital mortuary as investigations into the incident continue. The Buikwe police are working diligently to piece together the details surrounding the case.

In another bid to curb rising crime in the area, police in Njeru Municipality launched a crackdown on suspected drug abusers who had been allegedly terrorizing local communities. The operation followed numerous complaints from residents and local leaders regarding a surge in robberies linked to groups of drug users.

SP Butoto disclosed that twenty-two suspects were arrested and detained in Njeru Municipality, with the majority apprehended in the areas of Jinja Mpya, Namwezi, and Mbiko. The suspects now face a litany of charges, including aggravated robbery and drug abuse, among others.

The police are determined to bring law and order back to Buikwe district and are intensifying efforts to combat criminal activities, reassuring residents of their commitment to the safety and security of the community.
