LUUKA: The former vice-chancellor of Uganda Christian University (UCU), Dr. John Ssenyonyi, has urged religious leaders to lead by example.

Dr Ssenyonyi was speaking during activities to mark Fathers’ Union Day at Nawansega Archdeaconry in Luuka district yesterday (Wednesday) where he was invited as chief guest.

He expressed displeasure with men of God who are doing contrary to what they preach, especially when it comes to marriage issues.

“It is absurd that the clergy are taking the lead in abusing the institution of marriage and it is even more ridiculous that these are the very people preaching about marriage to their followers,” Dr Ssenyonyi said.

He urged married couples to reflect back on their journey of marriage and consider the challenges they encounter along the way as a test of their faith in God.

Busoga Central Diocese bishop The Rt. Rev. Patrick Wakula, urged the recently elected leaders of the Fathers’ Union led by Luuka District Education Officer Francis Kamyuka to serve with humility and unite the marrieds instead of fomenting divisions.

Bishop Wakula in his message lauded Dr Ssenyonyi for gracing the occasion and rallied the new leaders to lead diligently and serve people’s interests.

Luuka North legislator Luke Kyobe Inhyensiko in a message delivered through his representative, Muzaaya Bulukani Mbalumya, urged all married couples to heed to the bishop’s advise.

Kamyuka in his maiden address committed to setting up a SACCO for the union, holding different meetings, initiating ideas that will help bring prosperity to the union as well as conducting benchmarking visits to other dioceses. He requested Bishop Wakula to avail them with land so that they set up income-generating projects.
